What a single AI rule run actually costs

Asana does not publish a credits-per-run rate, and it cannot: a run is billed as (input × the model's input multiplier) + (output × its output multiplier). Two things follow. First, the same rule costs different amounts depending on how much text it is handed — a rule that summarises a 40-comment thread costs far more than one that reads a task title. Second, the model choice dominates everything else: between the cheapest and the dearest model the published multipliers differ by 16x on input and 8x on output, for identical work.

To turn that into a number you can budget with, someone has to measure it. The figures below come from a repeated test by an Asana Forum Leader running one identical rule — "when a task is added, add an AI comment" — across models, with and without web access. They are an order-of-magnitude anchor, not a tariff, which is why the estimator lets you overwrite the credits-per-run value once you have seen your own usage report.

The web-access column is the one that catches people out: switching it on multiplied the same rule's cost by roughly 5x to 15x. On Starter's 50,000 credits, a premium model with web access is worth about 36 runs a month for the entire account. The same pool is worth around 1,390 runs on a light model without web access — a 38-fold difference in what your included allowance buys, decided by two settings.

What happens when the pool runs out

Credits do not roll over — Basic and Plus reset monthly, Pro quarterly, and whatever you did not spend disappears. When the pool hits zero the AI steps stop firing until the reset or a top-up.

Plan for that failure quietly rather than loudly. The rules do not error, disappear or turn red; they keep running and simply skip the AI part. A workflow that had been drafting replies or triaging intake just stops producing them, and unless someone is watching the usage report, the first sign is a person noticing that the summaries stopped a fortnight ago. If you are anywhere near your ceiling, the cheap insurance is a calendar reminder to check usage mid-month, not a bigger plan.

The paid tiers: AI Studio Plus and Pro

Here honesty matters more than completeness: Asana names AI Studio Plus and Pro on its pricing page but prints no price for either. The figures below are what Asana staff have quoted in Asana's own community forum, corroborated by consistent third-party reporting. Use them to size a budget, then confirm the real number with sales before you commit to anything.

The detail that changes the maths is the unit. AI Studio Plus is priced per billing account, not per seat — so a 4-person team and a 60-person team pay the same ~$135 a month for the same extra 100,000 credits. That makes the add-on brutal for a small team (it can cost more than the seats themselves) and almost trivial for a large one. If you are five people on Starter, one Plus block is roughly $1,620 a year against about $660 of seats: the AI would be two-thirds of your Asana bill.

Before buying a block, try the lever that costs nothing: move the noisy rules onto a cheaper model and turn web access off where it is not earning its keep. Going from a Sonnet-class model with web access to a GPT-4o-class model without it changed the measured cost of the same rule from 1,388 credits to 36. That is a bigger saving than any add-on will sell you.

Does bundled AI make Asana's price better?

Somewhat, and honestly less than the marketing implies. Asana's competitors mostly sell AI as a per-seat add-on — ClickUp's Brain is $9 per user per month and Everything AI $28 — so a bundled pool genuinely is a point in Asana's favour, and for light use it is free capacity you would otherwise pay for.

But an account-wide pool does not scale with your team, and the seat price does. At 50 seats on Advanced you are paying about $15,000 a year for seats and still sharing the same 75,000 credits as a five-person workspace. How much does Asana AI Studio cost?

AI Studio Basic costs nothing extra: it is included with every paid Asana plan, with a monthly credit pool of 50,000 on Starter, 75,000 on Advanced and 200,000 on Enterprise. You only start paying when you exhaust that pool. The top-up, AI Studio Plus, is reported at about $135 per billing account per month on annual billing (around $150 month to month) for a further 100,000 credits, stackable in 100,000-credit blocks. AI Studio Pro is an annual, sales-quoted package of 5 million credits that resets quarterly.

Are Asana AI Studio credits per user or per account?

Per billing account. Asana's pricing page says the allowance is "per billing account per month", so a 5-seat Advanced workspace and a 200-seat Advanced workspace both get the same 75,000 credits. Adding seats adds cost without adding credits, which is exactly why big teams hit the ceiling first: the pool is fixed while the number of people triggering rules is not.

How many credits does one AI Studio rule run use?

There is no published per-run rate. A run costs (input x the model's input multiplier) + (output x its output multiplier), so it moves with the model and the amount of text involved. In a repeated community test of one identical rule that adds an AI comment to a new task, the same rule cost about 36 credits on a GPT-4o-class model, 118 on a Claude Haiku-class model and 270 on a Claude Sonnet-class model. Turning on web access pushed those to roughly 537, 786 and 1,388.

Do Asana AI Studio credits roll over?

No. Basic and Plus credits reset monthly and Pro credits reset quarterly; anything unused at the reset is gone. There is no bank, so an unusually quiet month buys you nothing in a busy one.

What happens when you run out of AI Studio credits?

The AI steps stop running until the pool resets or you buy more. This is the failure mode worth planning for, because it is quiet: the rules still exist and still fire, they simply skip the AI part, so a workflow that was summarising or triaging for you just stops producing output without anything visibly breaking.

Is AI Studio included in the Asana free plan?
